Ocean Downs Casino Begins Sports Wagering Operations

Dec. 17, 2021

Additional sports wagering openings on the horizon

(Baltimore) — The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) today issued a sports wagering license to Ocean Downs Casino in Berlin.

Prior to receiving its license, Ocean Downs successfully completed two days of controlled demonstrations, during which invited guests participated in live wagering as Maryland Lottery and Gaming staff ensured the facility complied with all required procedures, and that its systems and revenue reporting controls functioned properly.

The casino is among the 17 entities that were designated in the sports wagering law to conduct sports wagering operations, pending a review of their qualifications to receive licenses and is the fourth facility to open. MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill opened to the public on Dec. 9, followed by Live! Casino in Hanover and Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore on Dec. 10.

The controlled demonstrations and opening of sports wagering at Hollywood Casino in Perryville are expected next week. The SWARC awarded licenses to the five casinos on Nov. 18.

Three off-track-betting venues — Long Shot’s in Frederick, Riverboat on the Potomac in Colonial Beach, Va., and Greenmount Station in Hampstead — are expected to open in early 2022.

Maryland Lottery and Gaming’s Licensing investigators are in frequent contact with additional sports wagering facilities that were designated in the law, whose applications are in progress. State law requires that applicants “establish by clear and convincing evidence” that they are fully qualified before the MLGCC issues a license (State Government Article § 9-1E-07).
